S3 E3 - How to Redefine Success After Moving Abroad

How to Redefine Success After Moving Abroad

When you move abroad, success can suddenly feel unclear. The things that once defined you—your career, home, status, or social circle—may no longer apply.
You might find yourself questioning what success even means in this new context.

In this episode of The Stretch Zone Podcast, Feds and I talk about the shift that happens when your familiar markers of success disappear. We share our personal stories of losing, reshaping, and reclaiming our sense of achievement after moving countries.

1. Notice what’s changed
Moving abroad forces you to start again. You might have left behind a job, a network, or an identity that gave you confidence. Recognising this shift helps you understand why you might feel “off balance” even when things look fine on paper.

2. Separate external success from internal stability
Many expats chase the same goals they had before the move—career growth, income, or social approval. But your new environment might not support those old definitions.
Instead, look at what gives you peace, energy, or connection now. That’s the foundation of success in this new phase.

3. Let your values lead
Ask yourself what matters most to you right now. Maybe it’s community, creativity, or freedom. Redefining success around your current values builds a more grounded sense of direction and self-trust.

4. Allow it to evolve
Success abroad will keep changing as you do. The version that fits your first year may not suit your fifth. Being open to that evolution keeps you adaptable and less likely to feel “behind.”
